Four Automakers Agree to Proposed Takata Airbag Settlement

  • Sometimes, it isn’t another person who causes harm but a product instead. In one recent case, the harmful product is the Takata airbag inflator that exploded with too much force, killing or injuring drivers.

Toyota, BMW, Mazda, and Subaru will share a $553 million settlement that addressed class-action financial loss claims that covered the owners of close to 116 million vehicles equipped with the potentially defective Takata airbag inflators.

Subaru’s portion of the settlement comes to $68 million. Mazda’s take was $76 million. BMW got a bit more at $131 million, and Toyota will pay the most at $278.5 million.

How the Settlement Will Be Used

The money from the settlement is meant to fix more vehicles that were equipped with the faulty components. The companies indicated in the settlement had active recalls on these vehicles.

Some of the funds from the settlement will be used for an outreach campaign that is meant to increase awareness of the defective airbag inflators.

Another portion will be spent reimbursing people who incurred any sort of cost to get their vehicles repaired. These types of costs can include lost wages, child care, rental cars, and anything else that can be reasonably associated with having to take a vehicle in to be repaired.

Settlement money will also fund a customer support program that will cover extra repairs or adjustments that might become necessary within the first 75,000 miles after the replacement of the faulty components.

    Pending Lawsuits

Nissan, Ford, and Honda have lawsuits regarding the Takata airbags that have yet to be settled.

Anyone who has vehicles with these airbags could have been affected by the recall and settlement.
