Minimum Income for Filing Taxes

  • Most people living in the United States are required to pay taxes, but there are a few exceptions. Some people aren’t required to pay taxes if they meet certain requirements.

    One of those requirements is called the minimum income requirement. This means that if you make under a certain amount of money each year, you don’t have to file an income tax return at all.

    You may not be aware of what those minimum income limits are, and there are some factors that will affect the minimum income limit, such as age. See below for more information on minimum income for filing taxes.

    Do You Meet the Minimum Income Required for Filing Taxes?

    • If you are single and under the age of sixty-five, you don’t have to file a tax return if your income is under $12,000.
    • If you are the head of a household and under the age of sixty-five, you don’t have to file a tax return if your income is under $18,000. If you are over the age of sixty-five and filing as the head of a household, you don’t need to file a tax return if your income is under $19,600.
    • If you are married and filing a joint tax return and both spouses are under the age of sixty-five, you don’t need to file a return if your income is less than $24,000. If one spouse is sixty-five or older, you don’t need to file a return if your joint income is less than $25,300. If both spouses are over sixty-five, you don’t need to file a return if your combined income is less than $26,600.
    • If you are married and filing separately, you will need to file a return if your income was at least $5, no matter your age.
    • If you are a qualifying widow(er) under the age of sixty-five, you don’t need to file a return if your income is less than $24,000. If you’re over the age of sixty-five, you don’t need to file a return if your income is less than $25,300.
