About Me
Robert Don Gifford is an accomplished trial lawyer and founding member of GIFFORD LAW, P.L.L.C. a boutique law firm with an emphasis in the areas of civil rights, white collar/criminal defense, Native American Law, and military law. A former federal prosecutor in Oklahoma City and Reno, NV where he served as Human Trafficking Coordinator and a Tribal Liaison for the U.S. Attorney's Office. He also previously served as the Anti-terrorism Advisory Coordinator, CARE Court team (re-entry court), and the Project Safe Neighborhoods Coordinator.
A tribal member of the Cherokee Nation and a former editor on the American Indian Law Review at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Mr. Gifford also serves as the Chief Judge for the Kaw Nation and the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, as well as an Associate Judge for both the Miami Tribe, Seminole Tribe, and Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, as well as a Justice on the Supreme Courts for the Comanche Nation, the Pawnee Nation, and the Sac and Fox Tribe of Oklahoma.
In 2019, Mr. Gifford retired as a Colonel with 23 years of active and reserve service in the U.S. Army where he served as Judge Advocate (JAG Corps) where he began his legal career on active duty at various duty stations. Mr. Gifford has also previously served as a part-time Municipal Court Judge for Oklahoma City, as an Assistant D.A. in Tulsa County, and began his career at the Cherokee Nation under Chief Wilma Mankiller. He has also served an adjunct law professor at the law schools at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, the University of Arkansas, as well as the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, VA and the U.S. Department of Justice's National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC.
Mr. Gifford previously served as Chair of the Criminal Law Section for the Oklahoma Bar Association (2018), previously served on the state bar's Board of Governors, & Founder and previous Chair of the Military & Veteran’s’ Law Section (2012, 2013 and 2021). In 2013, Mr. Gifford was named by the Okla. Bar Association’s “Professional Advocate of the Year,” and in both 2015 and 2023 was given the Justice Cardozo Golden Quill Award for his work in criminal law. In 2021, the Cherokee Nation recognized Mr. Gifford with its Medal of Patriotism for his military service and continued work for military veterans and families.
Mr. Gifford received his law degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, undergraduate degrees from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and holds a Masters from the U.S. Army War College.
