According to the Department of Homeland Security, Ethiopia has been given Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for an extended period of time of 18 months (DHS). As of October 20, 2022, TPS will only be accessible to individuals who currently reside in the United States.
"The United States understands the ongoing armed conflict and the unprecedented and temporary conditions engulfing Ethiopia, and DHS is dedicated to providing temporary protection to those in need," said Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security. Ethiopians living in the US now who are unable to safely return because of conflict-related violence and a humanitarian catastrophe that includes severe food shortages, flooding, drought, and displacement will be permitted to stay and work in the US.
