Debt collectors are prevented by this law from many practices, including misrepresenting the amount of the debt or their right to collect it, threatening or harassing debtors, contacting you when you have requested they stop, contacting you at inconvenient times or places, telling others about your alleged debt, and many other abusive and unfair practices. Under the FDCPA, you have the right to bring a lawsuit to stop these practices and to collect damages for violations of the law. Successful lawsuits may result in an award of damages as well as court costs and attorney's fees so that you don't owe anything.
The FDCPA covers consumer debt, including personal, family and household debt. It does not cover debts incurred for business purposes. Typical consumer debts include credit cards, car loans, mortgages, and medical bills.
